In this workshop there will be 2 topics:

  1. Axillary web syndrome (AWS) management
  2. Negative Pressure (cupping) Techniques for Scar Tissue after Cancer Surgery and Radiotherapy

Participant numbers: 30 persons maximum
Axillary Web Syndrome (AWS), or cording, is a common post-surgical complication following lymph node dissection in breast cancer treatment, leading to pain, tightness, and restricted shoulder mobility. There is an established link between AWS and lymphedema, so early detection and treatment is key. This interactive workshop provides healthcare practitioners with practical, hands-on techniques to effectively assess and manage AWS, improving patient outcomes and quality of life.
Participants will learn manual therapy approaches, including stretching protocols, myofascial release and scar tissue mobilization designed to restore range of motion and reduce discomfort. The workshop will also cover patient education strategies to empower self-management and long-term recovery. Through guided demonstrations attendees will gain insight into the benefits of this approach within clinical settings.

Negative Pressure (cupping) Techniques for Scar Tissue after Cancer Surgery and Radiotherapy
Negative pressure therapy, commonly known as cupping, is a technique that has potential benefits for scar tissue and fibrosis management in patients following cancer surgery. This therapy involves the application of suction to the skin, which increases blood circulation, promotes tissue elasticity, and may aid in reducing scar adhesions and fibrosis. In post-cancer surgery patients, particularly those who have undergone open surgery and after radiotherapy such as mastectomy, lumpectomy, or reconstructive procedures, scarring can lead to pain, restricted mobility, and aesthetic concerns. Negative pressure therapy is a non-invasive, adjunctive therapy which provides a simple and accessible treatment option to improve scar pliability, reduce pain, and enhance outcomes following surgery and radiotherapy.
By the end of this workshop attendees will be able to describe the benefit of negative pressure therapy (cupping) for scars and fibrosis, and will be able to list contraindications to negative pressure therapy (cupping). Simple negative pressure therapy (cupping) technique suitable for
These sessions are ideal for physical therapists, massage therapists, lymphedema specialists, and other rehabilitation professionals seeking to enhance their expertise in AWS management.
