Private sect:
On 6/6/2012, I became a specialist in cardiothoracic and vascular surgery according to the Iraqi Medical Association, and since that time, I have operated a private clinic, the most recent of which was licensed in Baghdad on 2/12/2020 by the Iraqi Medical Association.

Detailed scope of work:
After becoming a fellow of the Iraqi Board of Medical Specializations, I returned to work as a lecturer in my specialty at the College of Medicine, University of Babylon. In line with this academic role, I practiced my clinical specialty at Hilla General Teaching Hospital, the surgical teaching hospital affiliated with the college, starting from February 4, 2008.

At that time, Iraq was experiencing widespread terrorist and violent events, which significantly influenced our medical practice, focusing primarily on emergency cases. For ten years, I was on 24-hour on-call duty every 3–5 days. I was extensively involved in the surgical treatment of thoracic and vascular trauma, managing complex and aggressive pathologies such as shock wave injuries, high and low-velocity missile wounds, blunt trauma, and simple penetrating injuries. Most of our cases involved multiply injured patients.

Elective thoracic and vascular cases were also commonly encountered. My work included both emergency and diagnostic bronchoscopic procedures using rigid and fiberoptic bronchoscopes. Thoracotomies for various lung, mediastinal, and chest wall pathologies, as well as elective vascular procedures—such as varicose vein surgeries and bypass procedures for surgically correctable arterial diseases—were a routine part of our daily surgical practice during that decade.

As the global medical landscape evolved, I made continuous efforts to keep pace with advancements in diagnostic and therapeutic modalities. I participated in numerous international courses, clinical attachment trainings, workshops, and conferences, which enriched my clinical experience. My work placed particular emphasis on venous and lymphedema surgery, an area in which I played a pioneering role in Iraq.

Currently, I am practicing several modern treatment techniques for superficial venous pathologies. I was among the earliest to implement microsclerotherapy, foam sclerotherapy, and endovenous laser ablation (EVLT) in Iraq, and I was the first in the country to use double ring fibers and the advanced 1470 nm endovenous laser technique.

In the field of endovenous surgery for deep venous diseases, our team has developed significant experience over the past two years. Our early work was published in a prominent Italian journal, with a manuscript entitled "First Reported Series of Iliocaval Stenting from Iraq: What Are the Earliest Lessons?"

In thoracic surgery, I am part of the team that first introduced EBUS (endobronchial ultrasound) technology in Iraq. To this day, we remain the only team using EBUS and other advanced diagnostic tools for thoracic pathologies, in addition to the routine surgeries we perform at Tiba Private Hospital in Babil.

Regarding lymphedema, after acquiring the necessary training and knowledge in the latest treatment modalities for these complex and challenging conditions, I have gained valuable experience and have published academically in this area. I recently received specialized training in and now practice microvascular physiological corrective lymph surgery.

Professor Håkan Brorson, MD, PhD is Senior Consultant Plastic Surgeon, Director of the Lymphedema Centre, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Skåne University Hospital, Malmö. He is affiliated to the Department of Clinical Sciences in Malmö, Lund University and Lund University Cancer Centre, Sweden. He received his Medical Degree and PhD at Lund University. Specialist in plastic and orthopaedic surgery. He is Professor of plastic surgery at Lund university, Lund, Sweden; Professor at Esculera de Graduados, Asociación Médica Argentina (EGAMA), Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Honorary Professor at Macquarie University, Sydney.

His research is focused on the formation and distribution of adipose tissue in lymphedema using CT, MR Imaging/Spectroscopy and Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry for gross anatomy; microarray and RT-PCR for genetic studies; metabolomics and lipidomics; incidence of erysipelas after liposuction; long-term results after liposuction of arm and leg lymphedema. He has trained 42 teams around the world to treat lymphedema with liposuction, a treatment that he developed over 30 years ago.

Dr. Mariappan Muthuchamy received his Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology from Madurai Kamaraj University. He then got his postdoctoral training at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. Dr. Muthuchamy then joined as an Assistant Professor and rose to the rank of Professor at the Department of Physiology, College of Medicine, Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, USA. Dr. Muthuchamy lab group is focused on understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms of lymphatic anomalies using different animal models of lymphedema, metabolic and neuromuscular diseases. He has trained several graduate students and postdoctoral scientists in lymphatic biology. Dr. Muthuchamy’s research has been continuously supported by several federal funding agencies, including National Institutes of Health, American Heart Association and Department of Defense.

Dr. Stanley Rockson (MD, FACP, FACC) is the Allan and Tina Neill Professor of Lymphatic Research and Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine, the only endowed professorship in the United States that is devoted to the biological and medical features of the lymphatic system. Dr. Rockson is widely acknowledged to be responsible for the resurgence of interest in lymphatic function and disease. As a principal investigator (or co-investigator), he has been involved in numerous clinical trials researching various aspects of lymphatic disease, vascular biology and cardiovascular medicine. His basic research involves the investigation of disease pathogenesis and identification of biomarkers of lymphatic diseases, as well as research into molecular and pharmacologic therapeutics. As a Professor of Medicine, Dr. Rockson serves concurrently as the Stanford’s Chief of Consultative Cardiology and the Director (and Founding Director) of the Stanford Center for Lymphatic and Venous Disorders. Dr. Rockson is a co-founder of the Lymphatic Education and Research Network (LE&RN). In 1999 and 2000, Dr. Rockson organized the first agenda-setting extramural conferences devoted to lymphatic disease, held on the campus of the NIH. Subsequently, in 2004, he was invited to serve in an advisory role, for 4 years, to help the intramural and extramural lymphatic programs to coalesce. These activities led him to help NHLBI to develop the Trans-NIH Lymphatic Coordinating Committee, a body that continues to meet quarterly and upon which he continues to serve in an ex officio manner. In 2016, Dr. Rockson began his tenure as one of the Directors of the American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine. Dr. Rockson co-founded the Lymphatic Education and Research Network (LE&RN) and continues to serve as the Chair of LE&RN’s Scientific and Medical Advisory Board. Dr. Rockson also served as the Chair of the inaugural Gordon Research Conference (GRC), entitled ‘Molecular Mechanisms in Lymphatic Function and Disease’, a series that continues to attract the lymphatic research community on a biennial basis. More recently, to serve the burgeoning output of lymphatic research, he has helped to organize the Lymphatic Forum, which also meets biennially on an alternating basis with the GRC. In addition, Dr. Rockson is Editor-in-Chief of Lymphatic Research and Biology and sits on the editorial board of Angiology and, more recently, Scientific Reports. Dr. Rockson has been a frequent invited lecturer at national and international meetings, congresses, and societies. As Director of Research of the Viertel Cancer Research Centre, Professor Sandi Hayes leads a comprehensive intra- and extramural program of cancer research. Following undergraduate training in exercise science, postgraduate training in exercise oncology and postdoctoral training in cancer survivorship epidemiology, Professor Hayes has led cancer cohort studies and clinical trials focused on understanding and reducing cancer-related morbidity, as well as enhancing quality of life and survival for those diagnosed with cancer. Professor Hayes’s pioneering research in exercise oncology and cancer-related lymphoedema have driven international guidelines, policies and practice. Professor Hayes is passionate about driving research excellence in cancer in Queensland, and improving cancer research and workforce capacity required to underpin advancements in cancer prevention and survivorship.

Main clinical activities and fields of interest: diagnosis and treatment of lymphedema, prevention of secondary lymphedema, prevention and treatment of lymphatic complications in oncological and vascular surgery, diagnosis and treatment of primary and secondary thoracic, abdominal and peripheral chylous disorders, use of ICG fluorescence in reconstructive microsurgery, general and vascular surgery.

He designed and implemented an original microsurgical technique for the primary prevention of arm lymphedema in patients with breast cancer: LY.M.P.H.A. – Lymphatic Microsurgical Preventive Healing Approach. The use of this preventive technique has also been extended to other oncological fields (gynecological and urological tumors, cutaneous melanomas, etc.).

He is the author and co-author of over 250 scientific publications and chapters for 25 textbooks of general surgery, vascular and lymphatic surgery. Invited speaker, President, Chairman and member of the scientific committee of over 200 national and international congresses.

Maureen McBeth is a licensed physical therapist and certified lymphedema therapist with over 25 years of experience in oncology rehabilitation, clinical education, and patient advocacy. She currently serves as Senior Medical Affairs Liaison at ImpediMed, where she supports the use of bioimpedance spectroscopy for early lymphedema detection and body composition analysis across medical disciplines.

Previously, Maureen led cancer rehabilitation programs at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore and was a consultant with healthcare and industry partners to advance lymphatic care. She has been a vital member of the lymphology community since 2004, fostering global collaborations to drive changes in clinical practice.

A nationally recognized educator, Maureen has taught for the Norton School of Lymphatic Therapy and regularly presents at major conferences including the National Lymphedema Network, ACRM, and BC3. Her work is published in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks, and she has participated in medical missions with colleagues in Cali, Colombia.

Maureen is a passionate advocate for evidence-based, patient-centered care and continues to lead initiatives that shape the future of cancer rehabilitation and lymphatic health.

Louise Koelmeyer is Head of Department and Associate Professor in the Department of Health Sciences at Macquarie University. She is also the Director of the ALERT (Australian Lymphoedema Education, Research and Treatment) Centre.

As Head, since February 2023, Louise develops and supports academics and academic endeavours by providing leadership to the Department and Faculty, and enhances the quality of teaching, research and community engagement within the Department.

As Director, since January 2020, Louise’s focus is to strategically manage and develop the education, research and treatment arms of the innovative multidisciplinary translational research centre.

Louise has been leading and teaching in the ALERT Education Program since its inception which offers a comprehensive training program aligned with the Australasian Lymphology Association’s (ALA) Competency Standards. This program includes all essential learning and assessments required for accreditation as a Lymphoedema Practitioner. Additionally, the education offerings were designed to align with Macquarie University’s microcredentialing and curriculum architecture frameworks, with

Louise playing a key role in the development of these programs and the Graduate Certificate of Lymphoedema Management.

Louise Koelmeyer graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Occupational Therapy from the University of Sydney in 1990 and was awarded her PhD from Macquarie University in April 2021. She has over 30 years of clinical experience in both public and private hospital, and clinic settings specialising in breast cancer rehabilitation and lymphoedema management in all areas of assessment, education, early detection and treatment.

Louise is an accredited Lymphoedema Practitioner and is listed on the ALA National Lymphoedema Practitioner Register.

Louise’s research interests are in achieving better outcomes in innovative early and advanced lymphoedema management through conservative and surgical treatment with her clinical interests and expertise in developing a therapeutic relationship with individuals and personalising treatment programs that support the individual’s needs and goals to achieve positive outcomes.

Otmar Randolph Marald Wikkeling MD, MBA, CMIO, born on 28th of July 1964, Paramaribo, Surinam.
Is a vascular and lymphedema surgeon and has also special interest in both arterial work (CO2, CK-AKI, complex endovascular Aorta) and superficial and deep venous (Pelvic Venous Disease and Post Thrombotic Syndrome) work.

Dr.Ali Rıza Erçöçen graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 1992, completed his plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery training at the Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 1998, and appointed as assistant, associate and full professor at the Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, Cumhuriyet University Faculty of Medicine from 1998 to 2011. He has also Craniomaxillofacial Surgery and Hand Surgery subspecialty diplomas. In 2011, Dr.Erçöçen established Dept. of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery at Bayındır HealthCare Group Hospitals in Istanbul as professor and chair to present.

Between 2000 and 2002, Dr.Erçöçen participated in a study program as clinical and research fellow at the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Tokyo Women’s Medical University under Professor Motohiro Nozaki as a Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) International Scholar. Between September 2003 and March 2004, Dr. Erçöçen received a International Visiting Plastic Surgeon Scholarship from American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) Plastic Surgery Foundation (PSF), and he visited the Division of Plastic Surgery at University of Suthern California under Professor Randy Sherman, the Division of Plastic Surgery at Los Angeles Children Hospital under Assoc. Ad Hendrickx serves as Program Manager for Research & Innovation and as a physical therapist at the Dutch Center of Expertise for Lymphovascular Medicine in Drachten, the Netherlands. He specializes in both lymphoedema and lipoedema.

Over recent years, Ad has played a key role in introducing and implementing the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) in daily care at the Expert Centre and throughout its care network, including the use of tailored clinimetric instruments. His professional interests also include promoting self-management and optimizing interprofessional collaboration within healthcare.

Ad contributed as a member of the working group that developed the Dutch guidelines for lymphoedema and lipoedema in 2013 and 2014. He is a member of the Dutch Expert Group for Lipoedema and the Dutch Lymphoedema Framework. Currently, he serves as co-chair of the International Lipoedema Association (ILA).

In September, Ad received his PhD from Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen with his thesis entitled “Exploring Lymphedema, from Practice to Research and Back.”

Dr. Cecilia Dupecher is the Vice President for Scientific Affairs at the Lymphatic Education & Research Network (LE&RN), where she leads the organization’s scientific strategy to ensure that research initiatives align with its mission. She works collaboratively with researchers, policymakers, and key stakeholders to advance scientific advocacy for lymphatic diseases, secure funding, and help translate research findings into actionable policies and programs. Prior to joining LE&RN, Dr. Dupecher served as Program Manager for the Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program (PRMRP) within the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) at the Department of Defense. In that role, she oversaw all phases of program execution, including managing a $370 million congressional appropriation, developing investment strategies and funding opportunities, overseeing scientific peer and programmatic reviews, and conducting program evaluations. Dr. Dupecher joined CDMRP in 2017 as a Science Officer, where she managed infectious disease research awards. In 2023, she was honored with the Army Civilian Service Achievement Medal for her exceptional leadership of the PRMRP.

Dr. Dupecher completed postdoctoral studies at the University of Maryland, focusing on plasma membrane injury and pathogen-host interactions. She also worked as a Research Scientist at the Center for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology at the University of Maryland, utilizing high-throughput RNA screening to investigate pathogen-host interactions, particularly in human macrophages infected with Leishmania. Dr. Dupecher earned her Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, with research on pathogen invasion pathways. Her previous roles include Postdoctoral Associate at Yale University and Program Specialist at the National Human Genome Institute (NIH).

Robert J. Damstra works since 1992 as dermatologist at the Nij Smellinghe hospital Drachten (Netherlands) in a team with 6 dermatologists, 2 vascular surgeons and many paramedical specialists.
In 2009 he obtained his PhD with the thesis “diagnostic and therapeutical aspects of lymphedema” at Maastricht University (Prof. Dr. P. Steijlen).

In 2005 he founded the Dutch expert centre for lympho-vascular diseases (ECL) in Drachten, which expanded to a centre with annual 500 new tertiary referrals, an outpatient clinic which thousands of patients, a clinical department for 12 patients providing both interdisciplinary diagnostics, integrated operative and conservative treatments. He was chair of the first (2003), second (2014) Dutch guideline working group on lymphedema and in 2023 the third guideline is planned to be published.

In 2006 he was one of the founding members of the Dutch Lymphedema Network (NLNet) and became in 2019 honourable member from NLNet.

In 2015 the ECL Drachten is recognized by the ministry of health as national expert centre for primary and paediatric lymphedema. The ECL became member of the European Reference Network (ERN) in the VASERN-group (See www.vascern.eu).
Since 2015 he is chair of the primary and paediatric working group (PPL-WG) and member of the council from VASCERN. Together with expert centres all over Europe they cooperate to enhance cross border healthcare, improve quality of care and provide information for patients in Europe. He researched and published many articles in the field of lympho-vascular medicine and works together with others in that perspective.

Finally, in 2021 he was founding member and treasurer of the board of the International Lipoedema Association (ILA) and worked on the European consensus document for lipoedema.
RD is active in the international board of the International Lymphedema Framework (ILF) and member of the global oversea committee of the Lymphatic Education & Research Network (LS&LR)

Emma Holly is a leading specialist in Scar Therapy, providing education around the world for health and wellbeing professionals. Emma is a presenter on this specialist area at international conferences and symposiums, including the international Scars2023 in Berlin, the Association of Breast Surgery Conference 2024 in Bournemouth, UK, Australasian Lymphology Symposium, New Zealand 2023 and returned to present workshops again in Australia 2025 and at Therapy Expo in 2022, 2023 and 2025. Emma contributed to the paper ‘An evaluation of a ScarWork service for cancer survivors experiencing adverse effects of surgery and/or radiotherapy’ European Journal of Integrative Medicine Volume 44, June 2021, 101327

Emma continues to see private patients for scar therapy in Harley Street – London’s most famous street for health professionals. Together with tutor Tina Glynn, they support people struggling with post-operative or injury complications or people looking to optimise their recovery after a recent injury.

Dr. Emily Iker has been a director of the Lymphedema Center in Santa Monica for nearly three decades since MLD certification, from Prof. Albert Leduc, the world-renowned lymphologist. She is the leader in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of lymphedema, not only on a scientific level but also understands lymphedema on a personal level. She developed secondary lymphedema during her surgical residency, which was the turning point that led her into PM&R at New York Medical College. She is a lymphology researcher, lecturer, teacher, and mentor. She is a co-author of “Current diagnostic and quantitative techniques in the field of lymphedema management: a critical review,” “Lymphedema and Lipedema nutrition guide”, Standard Care for Lipedema in the USA, and others. 2001 yılında Sağlık Bakanlığı Ankara Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi, Fizik Tedavi ve Rehabilitasyon Kliniğine başasistan olarak atandı. AÜTF Kardiyoloji ABD’da uzmanlık sonrası kardiyak rehabilitasyon eğitimini tamamladı. 2001-2019 yılları arasında Sağlık Bakanlığı Ankara Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesinde onkolojik rehabilitasyon ve lenfödem ünitesinde kurucu, kardiyopulmoner rehabilitasyon ve el rehabilitasyonu ünitelerinde eğitici olarak görevler aldı. Hastanenin ilgili bölüm ve ünitelerinde sistematik olarak kullanılan klinik muayene, değerlendirme, tıbbi dosyalama, onam ve egzersiz formlarının oluşturulmasında aktif rol aldı.

Dr. Ayça Utkan Karasu, Gazi Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Fiziksel Tıp ve Rehabilitasyon Anabilim Dalı’nda doçent doktor olarak görev yapmaktadır. Tıp doktoru unvanını 2005 yılında Hacettepe Üniversitesi’nden almış, Fiziksel Tıp ve Rehabilitasyon uzmanlık eğitimini ise 2011 yılında Gazi Üniversitesi’nde tamamlamıştır.

Dr. David Doubblestein is an Associate Professor in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at A.T. Still University in Mesa, Arizona, with over 25 years of experience in physical therapy. He specializes in Complete Decongestive Therapy, Manual Lymphatic Drainage, Myofascial Release, various joint mobilization tenets, and therapeutic exercises drawing from a strong background in outpatient care and private practice. He earned a Master of Science in Physical Therapy from Grand Valley State University and a PhD in Physical Therapy from the University of Michigan-Flint. Dr. Doubblestein is a LANA-Certified Lymphedema Therapist, a Board-Certified Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist, and a Certified McKenzie Therapist. From 2005 to 2022, he taught CLT continuing education courses at multiple continuing education institutions. As Vice President of the Lymphology Association of North America, he works to advance lymphology across healthcare disciplines. He is also the author of Manual Lymphatic Techniques for the Orthopedic Manual Therapist. Dr. Doubblestein’s research focuses on lymphatic disorders, cancer-related lymphedema, and the integration of lymphology with orthopedics and pediatrics. His recent studies explore manual lymphatic drainage, multilayer compression, and the neuromuscular effects of chronic edema. Assoc. Prof. Dr Dragana Bojinović Rodić is a specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Head of the Angiology Department at the Institute of Physical Medicine, Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic Surgery "Dr Miroslav Zotović" in Banja Luka. She has worked at the Institute since 2008 and she qualified as a specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in 2012. Her main area of interest is the treatment of lymphoedema. In this field, she obtained her PhD in 2016 at the Faculty of Medicine, University in Novi Sad (Serbia), with a thesis on the effectiveness of decongestive and pressotherapy in patients with arm lymphoedema following breast cancer surgery. In 2022, she was appointed Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University in Banja Luka. Dr Bojinović-Rodić has undertaken extensive professional training in the field of lymphatic and venous disordes including: certified course in vascular ultrasound, musculoskeletal ultrasound, as well as manual lymphatic drainage and complex decongestive therapy based on the Dr Vodder method. She has been a certified instructor for the Vodder Academy since 2019. She has received international recognition, including the “Dr Vodder / G. Wittlinger” award in 2019. She has authored or co-authored numerous scientific papers and is a member of national and international professional associations, including European Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (ESPRM) and Cochrane Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Dr. Harvey N. Mayrovitz completed his graduate training at the University of Pennsylvania and conducted his postdoctoral work at Temple University School of Medicine and the Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia. He also trained at the Medical Faculty and Hospital in Rotterdam and Delft University in the Netherlands. From 1995 to 1998, he served as the Director of Research at the Miami Heart Research Institute. He joined Nova Southeastern University in 1998 and is a professor of physiology at the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine in the Department of Medical Education. His teaching focuses on cardiovascular and respiratory physiology. His research interests include skin physiology, hemodynamics, and noninvasive clinical and biophysical measurements and processes to assist in diagnosis and therapy. He has authored over 200 publications in peer-reviewed scientific and clinical journals on these and related topics. He has also written multiple invited book chapters. Dr. Mayrovitz continues his research activities and mentors many medical students in various research projects.

After being qualified as in 1998, she was trained in lymphology in France, Germany and Belgium.  She has been working in the Lymphedema Unit in University Hospital La Fe, Valencia (Spain), since July 2000, in the diagnosis and treatment of lymphedema and lipedema.  She has conducted some research and published the results in international journals and congresses. She is a Member of the Executive Committee of the European Society of Lymphology, Member of the Board of the Lipedema World Alliance, member of the Board of the International Compression Club, Developing partner of VASCERN and President and Founder of the Spanish Group of Lymphology.  She is also Associate professor at University of Valencia.

Dr. Hayahito Sakai graduated from the School of Medicine at Tohoku University. After completing his junior residency at Hiraka General Hospital (Akita, Japan), he spent two years as a senior resident in general surgery at the same hospital, which included three separate three-month rotations at the Altitude Emergency and Critical Care Medical Center of Tokyo Metropolitan Bokutoh Hospital (Tokyo, Japan).

He began his career in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 2017, and from 2018 to 2024 worked at the Center Hospital of the National Center for Global Health and Medicine (Tokyo, Japan) under Dr. Takumi Yamamoto. In 2024, he joined Sagara Hospital to further his career. His specialties include reconstructive microsurgery and lymphatic microsurgery.

Dr. Sakai was awarded the v-WIN Foundation Scientific Award at the 44th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Phlebology and received a Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C) [JP24K11797] in 2024. Ayse Keles is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Galway's School of Computer Science and a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Fellow at the ADAPT Research Centre. Her research focuses on using artificial intelligence in medical domain, particularly deep learning, to solve problems in medical image processing. She's interested in a range of topics, including brain MRI, retinal imaging, oncology, and creating Explainable AI (XAI) systems that can support clinical decisions.

She earned her Ph.D. in Computer Science from Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University, where her thesis focused on using deep learning to segment and extract features from cerebrospinal fluid flow in MRI scans. Her current project, DL-I-PBraTSC, involves developing transparent deep learning for the intelligent prediction of pediatric brain tumor segmentation and classification, funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 program.

Her career spans both academia and industry. Before her current role, she was a Doctoral Faculty Member at Ankara Medipol University and a Guest Lecturer at Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University. For nearly two decades, she worked at the Ministry of Health in Turkey as a Decision Support Systems Specialist and Software Project Manager, where she was instrumental in developing a national health data warehouse (e-pulse project) and a payroll service for over 340,000 healthcare workers (ekobs project).

Stephen (Steve) Kelland is Ottawa-based “Lymphedema – Guerrilla Warrior General” (LymphoGWG), at Facebook page Lymph Nexus Canada. In addition to being a long-time advocate-at-large, LymphoGWG is an appellant, ambassador, and champion for the cause*, plus a longer-time afflictee with a complex presentation of severe primary Lymphedema (LE). LymphoGWG’s “lived” experience to date has well-equipped him for his role.
(* The “cause” is the global fight vs. the chronic, progressive, oft-debilitating, socially-stigmatizing, and medically-marginalizing ‘scourge’ that is Lymphedema, abbreviated as “LE”.)

Steve’s mission as Lymphedema – Guerrilla Warrior General is to add to the “Lymphedema narrative” the oft-overlooked male voice and perspective associated with this non-discriminatory disease.

Steve has considerable first-hand experience living with LE. Time, effort, and overall personal investment in his own LE-related care has taken him across several countries to seek out proper, appropriate, and complete case-specific care, including to Walchsee, Austria, plus Genoa, Italy. That journey of personal health continues, along with his passionate advocacy efforts. The journey has also been one of learning and fighting for LE’s cause on the public health agenda. His view is that successful advocacy efforts must also be “active” ... not (apologetically) passive.

Life experience has taught him that although Canada is the home of universal healthcare, the level of care is not-so-universal for those living with LE ... often because LE is almost ‘universally unknown’ within society. At its core, this realization puts him in pursuit of appropriate LE care, which is inclusive – primary in addition to secondary; and male in addition to female…and for those with LE at any age, regardless of which bodily areas are impacted!

Steve’s “at-large” advocacy, outreach, and recognition efforts, including – notably – as Chair of LE&RN: Canada Chapter, have ranged the full gamut from local, to provincial, to regional, to national-international, to global in support of key goals.
Steve’s conviction is that those living with LE should expect (and receive) the hope, help, support and care they need for a modicum of a quality of life. His focus is on quality – of life, of care, and of LIVING…not purely existing!  Not coincidentally, Steve stood up LE&RN: Canada Chapter in lockstep with the establishment of “World Lymphedema Day (WLD) – 6 March 2016”. With that in mind, Steve has supported numerous Lymphedema organizations during the past decade (including International Lymphoedema Framework; Canadian Lymphedema Framework plus its provincial affiliated partners in Quebec, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta; American Lymphedema Framework Project; National Lymphedema Network; Italian Lymphedema Framework; plus, the growing, increasingly global family of Lymphatic Education and Research Network (LE&RN) international and domestic (U.S.) chapters).

Advocate-at-Large “Lymphedema – Guerrilla Warrior General” (LymphoGWG), strives to align his efforts, activities and focused energies with like-spirited individuals and organizations within a coalesced, fortified, and united universal “Lymph Community”. The ultimate goal remains…cure or cures for this chronic, progressive, oft-debilitating, socially stigmatizing plus medically-marginalizing “disease”, “LE”!

Raul Mattassi is an italian vascular surgeon, former director of the Department of Vascular Surgery in the Hospital of Garbagnate Mianese (Milan).

He founded in his hospital in Milan the first Center for vascular malformations.
In 2010 he moved over to the hospital Humanitas in Milan founding there a new center and working only with vascular malformations.

Dr. Anıl Demiröz graduated from the English Medicine Program of Istanbul University-Cerrahpasa, Cerrahpasa Faculty of Medicine in 2007. She completed her residency training in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery at the same institution. During her training, she undertook observerships at New York University, Stanford University, and Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. She received her basic microsurgery training in Istanbul and advanced microsurgery training at Columbia University in New York.

In 2014, she obtained the European Board Certification in Plastic Surgery (EBOPRAS). Between 2014 and 2015, she fulfilled her compulsory service at Mardin State Hospital. Since 2015, she has been working as a faculty member at Istanbul University-Cerrahpasa.

She was awarded the EURAPS Young Plastic Surgeon Scholarship in 2018 and completed a 3-month clinical fellowship in reconstructive microsurgery under Dr. Jan J. Vranckx at UZ Leuven. In 2019, she received the international fellowship grant from the Turkish Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery, during which she studied lymphedema surgery and supermicrosurgery at the National Center for Global Health and Medicine in Japan.

Adam Kolesnik is a fetal and pediatric cardiologist at the Medical University of Warsaw, Poland, where he specializes in prenatal diagnosis and management of congenital heart disease. He has developed a focused clinical and research interest in lymphatic failure associated with single ventricle physiology, particularly in the prenatal and early postnatal periods. He collaborates across cardiology and imaging teams to evaluate thoracic lymphatic flow, protein-losing enteropathy, and chylous complications in patients with Fontan physiology and complex congenital anomalies.

Yoav Dori is an attending pediatric cardiologist at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Professor of Pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine. He serves as the Director of the Jill and Mark Fishman Center for Lymphatic Disorders. He is an interventional cardiologist and interventional lymphologist with a clinical and research focus on the central lymphatic system and its variants. His work integrates imaging analytics to improve diagnostic accuracy, percutaneous interventional and surgical planning.

Erin Pinto is an advanced practice provider in the division of cardiology and with the lymphatic team at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia with the Jill and Mark Fishman Center for Lymphatic Disorders. She co-led early clinical studies demonstrating how modern lymphatic imaging and interventions dramatically improve outcomes in central lymphatic flow disorders.

Dr. Smith is an attending pediatric cardiologist at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine. He is an interventional cardiologist and interventional lymphologist. His work integrates imaging analytics to improve diagnostic accuracy, percutaneous interventional and surgical planning. He has assisted in developing newer more advanced protocols for non-invasive MR lymphangiography and innovative percutaneous therapies used in both pediatric and adult patients with central lymphatic disorders.

Pablo Laje is an attending pediatric surgeon at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Associate Professor of Surgery at the Perelman School of Medicine. He serves as the Surgical Director of both the Jill and Mark Fishman Center for Lymphatic Disorders and the Pancreatic Disorders Program. Dr. Laje has been at the forefront of developing surgical solutions for central lymphatic failure, advancing techniques such as lymphatic decompression, lymphovenous anastomosis (LVA), and a range of innovative procedures to treat chylous complications—including protein-losing enteropathy, chylous ascites, chylothorax, and complex multicomponent lymphatic syndromes.

Marios Kritsilis is a physician-scientist with training in medicine and neuroscience. He earned his MD from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, graduating with honors, and recently completed his PhD in Experimental Medical Science at Lund University in Sweden. His research focuses on glia-immune interactions, neuroinflammation, and cerebrospinal fluid dynamics, with multiple first-author publications in high-impact journals. Dr. Kritsilis has held clinical and research positions across Europe and Asia, including placements in Greece, Hungary, China, Lithuania, and the UK, bringing a broad international perspective to his work.

Vibeke E. Hjortdal is a Professor of Congenital Heart Surgery at Copenhagen University and one of Europe’s leading authorities on lymphatic–cardiovascular interactions. Dr. Hjortdal’s groundbreaking research has deepened our understanding of how lymphatic circulation intersects with congenital heart disease, particularly in complex physiology such as single ventricle and Fontan circulation. Her work has illuminated the contribution of lymphatic dysfunction to heart failure and volume overload, the role of the lymphatic system in myocardial and pulmonary remodeling, and the potential for integrating lymphatic imaging into surgical decision-making for congenital heart disease. With a unique perspective that bridges surgical innovation, clinical research, and systems physiology, Dr. Hjortdal challenges us to redefine how we detect, interpret, and treat cardiac disease through the lens of the lymphatic system.

Professor Dr. Pınar Borman graduated from Ankara University Medical Faculty and completed her residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) at Hacettepe University, where she later became Associate Professor (2003) and Professor (2012). She earned her PhD in Algology (Pain Medicine) in 2011. She is a certified lymphedema specialist (Norton School of Lymphology) and a Certified Kinesio Taping Practitioner (CKTP).

Her main fields of interest include cancer rehabilitation, lymphedema, lipedema, pain medicine, and geriatric rehabilitation.

Professor Borman is the founding member and Chair of the Turkish Lymphedema and Lipedema Association and established the Hacettepe University Lymphedema Research and Practice Center, which she directed until 2020. She represents Turkey on the International Lymphedema Framework (ILF) Board, is a founding member of the International Lipedema Association (ILA) and the Lymphatic World Alliance (LWA), and serves on the ECM of the International Society of Lymphology (ISL). She is also aexecutive member of the Turkish Society of PMR Specialists, where she leads the Cancer Rehabilitation Special Interest Group, and contributes to the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (ISPRM).

She chaired the 2024 European Society of Lymphology (ESL) Congress in Istanbul and will chair the 30th World Congress of Lymphology (ISL 2025) to be held in Antalya, Türkiye, in October 2025.

Professor Borman has organized and contributed to numerous national and international congresses, symposia, and educational programs. She is the author or co-author of several national textbooks and chapters in international books on cancer rehabilitation, lymphedema, lipedema, kinesio-taping, and musculoskeletal pain. She has published over 300 scientific papers, delivered more than 250 presentations, and her work has been cited more than 2,600 times in the last decade.
